Ask an experienced trader what matters most and few will say entries. Position sizing decides how much a losing trade costs you, and a run of losing trades is inevitable. Sizing well is what lets you survive that run.

Start from the loss, not the target

Decide in advance how much of your account you are willing to lose on a single trade, commonly a small fixed percentage. From that figure and your stop distance, the correct position size falls out mathematically.

This flips the usual thinking. Instead of asking how much you could make, you first cap how much you could lose, and the size follows.

Why fixed percentage risk works

Risking a constant percentage means your position shrinks after losses and grows after gains, which naturally slows a drawdown and compounds a winning run.

It also removes emotion from the decision. The size is a calculation, not a feeling about how confident you are today.

A quick worked example

Suppose you cap risk at a fixed amount and your stop is a set distance from entry. Divide the risk amount by the per unit loss at the stop, and you have the number of units to trade.

Use a lot size or risk calculator to do this instantly rather than guessing under pressure.

Puntos clave

  • Size around the loss you can accept, not the profit you hope for.
  • Fixed percentage risk cushions drawdowns and compounds wins.
  • Let a calculator, not emotion, decide the size.
  • Trading leveraged products carries a high level of risk and can result in the loss of all invested capital. This article is educational and is not investment advice.
