Leverage lets you control a large position with a small deposit. It is the feature that makes forex and CFD trading accessible, and also the feature that ends most undisciplined accounts. Treat it with respect and it becomes a tool rather than a trap.

Two words that are not the same

Leverage is the ratio between the position you control and the capital you put up. Margin is the actual deposit the broker holds to keep that position open.

Higher leverage means a smaller margin requirement, which frees capital but also means smaller price moves have a larger effect on your balance.

The margin call

If losses erode your usable margin below the broker's threshold, positions can be closed automatically. This is not a penalty; it is the mechanism that stops your balance going negative.

Keeping a comfortable margin buffer, rather than trading at maximum size, is one of the simplest ways to avoid forced closures.

Leverage does not change your risk plan

The right question is never how much leverage is available but how much you are risking per trade. Two traders on the same leverage can run completely different risk levels depending on position size.

Decide your risk first, then use only as much leverage as that plan requires.

Puntos clave

  • Leverage is borrowing power; margin is the deposit that backs it.
  • Higher leverage magnifies both gains and losses.
  • Your risk per trade, not the available leverage, is what matters.
  • Trading leveraged products carries a high level of risk and can result in the loss of all invested capital. This article is educational and is not investment advice.
